Ways to see a Hosted Feature service in Excel

Been trying a number of ways to do this over the years but never got it.  Found a post recently that looked good but now I cannot find it.  Internally we hook to SDE/SQL but this is for public data so it is all in ArcGIS Online as a hosted service.

I tried a REST JSON query but cannot get the actual data to show.  

I also tried ArcGIS for Office again even though I would rather not have users installing add-ins.  In the past you could map excel data but not see data in excel from the service.

But I am getting this error even though I do not know what la.arcgis.com is and I want to use AGOL not Portal.
