View layer not editable

I have a view layer who's schema is configured to be editable, but members that are data editors still can't edit it. Even the parent's schema is configured to be editable. The members can edit the parent, but they can't edit the view for some . Because in the future I want them to only edit the view, this will be an issue. Below, I attached the schema configuration.

The issue here is a classic "settings override" in the Hosted Feature Layer View. Even if the parent is editable, the view has its own gatekeeper.

  • The Missing Toggle: In your View Configuration image (image_c677c1.png), you have "Enable editing" turned on, but you have to check the individual capabilities. If "Add," "Delete," and "Update" are not toggled on within that specific View’s settings page, editors will be blocked even if the parent layer allows everything.

  • The "Primary" Source Rule: Notice the blue alert in your image: "Setting must be configured on the hosted feature layer that this feature layer view was created from." While you can restrict a view further than the parent, you cannot make a view more permissive than the parent.

  • The Solution: Go to the Settings tab of the View Layer (not the parent). Scroll to the "Editing" section. You need to ensure that the toggles for Add, Delete, and Update (specifically "Attributes and geometry") are actually flipped to green. Currently, your image_c67a68.png shows these settings, but if that screen is from the parent and not the view, the view is likely still defaulting to "Read Only."

Double-check that you are on the Settings tab of the View itself. If "Update" is toggled on but "Attributes and geometry" is not selected, editors often get stuck.

Just to clarify, the screen shot I sent is from the view.  Add and Delete are intentionally not on. I don't want members to be able to delete and add features. I just want them to be able to update features from the view. Update is toggled on. I actually can't turn it off, as it is grayed out, as seen in image.

Hi @ChaceCarpenter

It looks like Editing is enabled properly. I think you said that some can edit the view. Is that the case?

  • How is the layer shared (org/group/everyone)?
  • What app are they using for editing?
  • What happens when they try to edit the view layer?

I'm happy to take a look if you can share a link to the view layer or add me to a group with my username emily_whatsnew

They can edit the parent, but in the future they won't have access to the parent, so I need them to be able to edit the view. It appears to be a bug because i created a copy of this layer and created another view and it worked.

They are editing in AGOL within a Map Viewer or sometimes just in the data tab of the layer.

I can add you to a group. Would your user name be  EmilyGeo

Hi @ChaceCarpenter

Yes you should find me under username emily_whatsnew.

Were you able to successfully share an view layer that folks can edit?

No, I was not ables to share a view that folks could edit. They can edit the parent feature layer. The parent is not a view. It is the original hosted feature layer.

Hi @ChaceCarpenter

Can you try this in the Settings for the View layer:

  • Toggle off Enable editing.
  • Toggle it back on.
  • Test to see if editing is enabled.

I'm happy to have a look at the layer if you can share it with me.

It doesn't fix the issue. I have a call with another Esri rep. I will see what they say and get back with you. It does appear it has something to do with this layer being linked to a survey123. Would you by chance know of a known issue affecting layers linked to a survey123?

I'm not aware of an issue like that. I'm sure tech support will be able to help troubleshoot the problem.

Thanks! Emily
