How can a layer with no features have too many to draw?

I'm creating some new layers from scratch. ArcMap at work runs painfully slowly, so I created blank shapefiles in ArcCatalog and uploaded them to AGOL so I could use the feature templates to create them there. Not because I cared about the template but because as far as I can tell there is no way to simply create a layer from scratch in AGOL. But that's another issue.

So, the key thing to remember here is there are NO features and the only field is ID. Yet, when I add them to a map to edit, I get the aggravating "was not drawn completely because it has too many features to draw. Try zooming in to a smaller area." error. Some of them I was able to create anyway and just accept not being able to see them in the editable map and have to go back and forth to the non-editable version to verify if they were drawing well (although I could at least see their outlines by selecting them from the attribute table).

I don't like any of that. But I can live with it. What I can't live with are the last two features which won't let me even begin to draw them because every time I double click it just vanishes!

So, how can a hosted feature made from a shapefile with no features and no vertices be too big to draw?!

HI Kessa,

That error message also displays when there is an error in the response from the server when drawing the layer at all. I'm going to guess that this is why you are seeing the error. We'll take a look at this error message to make it more helpful.

Try watching the web requests to verify if this is the cause:

https://community.esri.com/community/gis/web-gis/arcgisonline/blog/2017/10/17/so-you-want-to-display...

If you can post back the error from the service request or get in contact with technical support, they can help look into what is causing this.

I have been getting this message repeatedly the last two days regardless of how many features there are. When I check the data, everything is there but the visualization comes up blank.

I have this same issue with a map notes feature that was saved and converted to a hosted feature class. They show up in ArcGIS Collector but are not viewable in the AGOL Web Map.

Can you share your web map?

The map notes - test is the map notes which were saved.

MapNotesPublishHostedLayer is the published feature layer. This time the error is with Text. Other times the error occured with just lines and area, other times all four.

Hello Kelly,

I have the same problem, I load in AGOL a layer from a file Geodatabase and then in the feature layer I enable the editing capability when trying to visualize it in the web map I get the error of "was not drawn completely because it has too many features to draw. Try zooming in to a smaller area" even though there are only a couple of records and the data is visible from the attribute table.

On the other hand, if I access exactly the same data through an ArcGIS Server Feature Service, I can see and edit them without any problem.

I pass you the URL of the web map if you want to check it:

Thanks for posting your layers.

The development team has looked into the issue and has determined that there is a bug with this particular layer. They have a fix that will be available in the next release. The error message is caused by the service returning invalid parameters.

For the time being there are two ways to resolve this issue:

1. Republish your layer, which will rebuild the spatial index.

2. Rebuild the spatial index via the REST API as indicated in this documentation: Update Definition (Feature Layer)—ArcGIS REST API: Services Directory | ArcGIS for Developers

Let us know if either of these options resolve your issue.

Hi Kelly,

I am receiving this error on an AGOL hosted service published through Survey123. There are no features yet in it, and I've published other services w/out this issue. Is there a workaround for AGOL hosted services?

Thank you,

Amy

Hi Amy,

Were you able to try any of the above steps? They are all specific to hosted feature layers including those published through Survey123.
