How are storage credits consumed for data shared between two organizations?

Which organizational account is charged the storage credits for data that is shared through a group between two organisational AGOL accounts? I would assume that any analysis done would be tied to the individual users (unless that is an incorrect assumption??), but storage credits are not currently tracked by each user. Does it get charged based on the account that originally created/hosted the data, or are both organizations charged?

Hello Stephanie,

Storage credits for feature services will be charged to the Organization that originally published and hosts the data to their content in ArcGIS Online. When items are shared to a group in AGOL, they are still hosted by the original publishing Organization that shared the items.

Storage credits are charged to the entire Organization hourly, based on calculations and averages taken from total size of all published feature services, tile services, and file data uploaded to the Organization's Content once an hour. Storage credits are an organizational resource and are not charged to individual users.

To summarize, any members that publish content will be incurring storage costs to the Organization they are a member of, even if this data is shared to groups and other Organizations, as the original Organization will be hosting the original published item.

Analysis is tied to individual users in the credit reports page of the Organization, however analysis still draws from the Organization's total credit pool. This is true for any actions taken by any Organization members that utilize credits.

Thanks, Tyler. That is what I was assuming, but wanted to be certain.

Is it possible to transfer ownership of published data from one organization to another? Say we are doing work for a client who doesn't have much GIS expertise, and are setting up a project in AGOL which they can also use in Collector, and we use our organizational account for all the initial work as we determine the best approach and solution for their needs but then want to transfer the ownership of the final maps and feature services to their organizational account in the end? Is that an option? Or would everything need to be published using a user account from their organizational account from the start?

Hello Stephanie,

Once an item is published to an Organization in ArcGIS Online, it can only be shared with other Organizations through the use of Groups. Unfortunately there is currently no way to directly transfer published content between Organizations via the AGOL interface.

One possible option to accomplish this goal is to use the AGO Assistant tool, which is capable of cloning published items between Organizations. This tool can be found linked below.

AGO Assistant:

Another option in this scenario is creating a file geodatabase download of the published feature service data, and re-publishing the feature layer to the new organization from the downloaded FGDB of the data. This can be done by uploading the .zipped FGDB to the other Organization's content and selecting "Publish" on its item details page.
