Feature layer (hosted) field index problem

Hi, ever since the latest AGOL updates were released, I have not been able to add a Field index to Feature layer (hosted).

I go to the Settings page, then scroll down to Manage Indexes and click Field indexes, then Add index.  This screen looks different than in times past, and when I choose the fields then try to build the index, nothing happens.  There used to be a progress bar that pulled up along the bottom of the screen but this no longer happens.  I try to refresh the page to see if the index is there, and nothing.  It is not there!  Why can I not create these indexes like before?  Please help, thanks.

Hey @ClintOffutt1

In the developer console of the page, when you go to do this, is it producing any errors?

Hi, I do not know how to find the developer console on that page.  Here is what the page I use on AGOL, under contents, then pick the feature layer (hosted), then settings, then this:

Hey @ClintOffutt1.

We've recently upgraded the page, so you might notice some changes compared to the previous version. The new layout still includes an indicator for when an index is being created, and a success toast/notification for successful additions. I saw that you were facing a similar issue here https://community.esri.com/t5/arcgis-online-questions/problem-with-feature-layer-hosted-field-indexe.... The success toast feature was implemented recently, and I just tested it by adding a field index successfully.

Are you not able to add field indexes on all services, or a specific one?

It may be worth contacting Technical Support to help troubleshoot.

Hi, I am not able to create field indexes for any of the feature layer (hosted).  How long do you have to wait for the progress bar to come up?  I get this:

then nothing afterwards and the index is not created.  I have waited for a long time, 10-15 min. to see if the progress bar kicks in but nothing.  I will then refresh to see if the index has been built and it has not.

We do not have high usage at all.

I just tried creating attribute and full text indexes on a test layer and it also appears that I cannot create them either. After selecting some fields and then clicking "Create index" sometimes I saw a red error "unable to create index." Sometimes I've even seen green "success." Other times I did not see any message. In all cases, after refreshing the settings page the indexes do not exist. I don't have time to contact support today but will need to do this in the near future.

In my case it is happening on a hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online that is shared publicly. Editing is not enabled, it is read only. It was created from ArcGIS Pro publishing to ArcGIS Online. If anyone else has the problem I'd be curious to see how you created your hosted feature layer.

I also have an identical legacy feature layer that was indexed before the ArcGIS Online update and that one is still working fine. The attribute and full text indexes are the same as they were before the update. I am worried that if I try to re-create the indexes on that version there will be a problem.

Yes, if you recreate the layer or even overwrite the existing web layer, the indexes will be lost and you can not rebuild them with this newly occuring glitch in the AGOL.

hi @ClintOffutt1 and @BrianFausel would you be able to share a sample dataset with me so I can take a closer look and try to reproduce your issue?

I just tested on a hosted layer published from Pro to AGOL without editing enabled, shared publicly, and my index (full text) was created successfully. After refreshing the page, my index was still present.

Thanks

I would be will to share to the data if you could explain to me how to do so.

As far as your sample dataset, was this an existing, legacy dataset that already resided in the AGOL cloud, or did you create a new dataset to experiment with?   My index issue is with newly created layers (or those which have been recently over written from ArcGIS pro since this latest AGOL update)

hey @ClintOffutt1 could you share one of those newly created layers with me please? I was using a newly created dataset, created in Pro and published to AGOL.

There are a few options:

1. if the data is shared publicly, or if you feel comfortable with sharing the data publicly, go to the item details page, scroll down, and copy the service URL to send to me. Here's a screenshot of what I'm referring to:

2. if you're not comfortable sharing it publicly, feel free to create a group and share the data to the group. Please invite my username to join that group. My username is jillian_tr. Here's more information on how to create/invite to a group, if needed: https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online/share-maps/create-groups.htm

Please let me know if you have any questions
