Hi all,

short question about Viewer user type and download options.

I prepared an Online App and shared with some Viewers (group sharing, not public). I was asked how to download data... Is it correct that the "download data" option requires a Creator level as a user is first asked to select the format and therefore "creates" content before it can be downloaded?

Or does this only apply to Hosted Feature Fayers,  which cannot be downloaded by Viewers?

Many thanks in advance and BR,
Claudia

Right! Viewers can't "own" content in a Portal, so the standard "download" button won't work, as it requires conversion to a file-based format, as you note, which must be stored in the user's content.

If a given layer were already converted to a file, and that item were shared publicly, any user could download it.

Another option to get downloads to work for all users without repeatedly creating standalone files is to use Hub. Through a Hub site, the download links directly prepare a file for the user. That way the data will be current up to the moment the file is generated, and you can tell users / members of the public to refer to your Hub page for all data download requests.

You are right. Unless the app is shared with everyone, to download an app from within a group, the user needs to have Creator or GIS Professional user-type, as it requires privileges to create and share items.

Download an app from a group page

Hi Jayanta,

Thank you very much for the quick answer.
It wasn't about downloading the app itself, but content (layers) presented through the app, but that probably still applies: "Hosted Feature Layers" have to be converted to another format (which is equivalent to content creation) before they can be downloaded and this requires a Creator User, type, right?

Hi Josh,

thank you very much for the confirmation and the reference to HUB. I haven't worked with it at all yet - I'll have to have a look at it first.

Hi Josh,

We encounter the same problem but with ArcGIS Site (Enterprise). Our viewers are not able to download the data. You said that through a Hub site, the download links directly prepare a file for the user, why is it not the same for ArcGIS Site ?

Thank you,
