Can the symbology of a Feature Layer (not hosted) be preserved when the layer is updated from the server?

Is there a way to preserve the symbology of a Feature Layer (which is not a hosted layer) when the layer is updated from the server?

For Feature Layers in ArcGIS Online it is possible to change and save the symbology under the Visualization tab:

However, it seems that if the layer is updated from its server, these symbology settings might be overwritten. Is there a way to preserve these symbology settings when the Feature Layer updates?

Not sure. Could you check if it works, when you save it as a layer item in ArcGIS Online?
