ArcGIS Online Metadata Editor reduces custom thumbnail resolution after saving

I've noticed that if I have an item in ArcGIS Online with a custom thumbnail that I uploaded, if I edit the metadata of the item and save the metadata, the thumbnail is replaced with a much lower resolution version of the image.  Does anyone else notice same?

Here is a sample of the thumbnail before saving metadata:

What size is the original thumbnail?

There are 2 bugs that seem related to this:

https://support.esri.com/en-us/bug/when-saving-the-metadata-in-arcgis-online-the-thumbnail-bug-00009...

Although the latter says "non-reproducible". I'm hoping this is still on their radar to fix.
