Hello, my company is involved in a lot of design work for Fiber & Utility companies, wherein we design their overall network for a certain geographic area.  Without getting too deep in the weeds, this involves designing placement of the fiber lines along utility poles and/or UG conduit, which also requires numerous accessory structures (i.e. splice points, hand holes, risers, anchors, cabinets, etc.).

We utilize AGOL for our design work, which involves creating hosted feature layers for each of the various features (poles, fiber lines, splice enclosures, etc.), and loading them into a Web map, which our designers then use to create the network.  This also may involve conducting field work utilizing Field Maps App wherein we'll attach photos of poles, etc. to the various layers in the map. At times we may have half dozen designers in the same map.  These layers have set schema of fields and drop down values for designers fill out as they create/edit (i.e., Fiber Layer will have a "Placement" field with either 'Aerial" or 'UG' as options).  We also utilize quite a bit of Arcade code in various fields to auto fill info based on various criteria.  As an example, for the fiber layer we need to have the start splice point and end splice point for each cable, so we've developed some code to auto fill those fields as the designer completes each line.

Our issue is that the map overall has quite a bit of lag/buffering and takes time to load as you pan/zoom around, but what's worse is that when you click on a feature to edit it may take a minute or two just to load the edit screen, and then another minute or two to complete and save the edits.  It is maddening....

I've tried numerous fixes to not much avail, which these have included:

  • Parsing the data down and splitting into multiple maps so 1.) the data sets are not as large & 2.) do not have as many people in one map/area
  • Rebuilding indexes
  • Optimizing layers
  • refining/reducing the Arcade scripts where possible (there's still a lot - each design area includes 12+ layers, which all contain at least 1-2 fields utilizing a script)
  • We typically utilize symbology that is readily available in ArcPro/AGOL - so nothing too customized

I know ESRI offers a Utility Network Design extension, and an Enterprise license would likely help, but at the moment those are not viable options for us.

We've utilized this same methodology for design on other projects and have never come close to experiencing the type of lag that we are now.  I'm running out of ideas (and patience) on my end.

Any ideas, thoughts, suggestions, that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated!!

THANK YOU!

Super basic but have you tried clearing the cache? https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop

Is it acting the same on every computer? Is it slow at the office or just in the field?

I organized my data better by grouping water mains, manholes, valves together and publishing as 1 layer rather than 3 separate.

How do I check/clear the cache?  And yes it's acting the same on all computers and different internet networks (most of the team work remote in various cities).

We tried publishing the layers as a group rather than individual hosted features, but did not make much of a difference.
