Add map package to 'My map'

I was wondering if it is possible to add map packages to a map on ArcGIS Online.
My content contains map packages and web maps. I want to make a web map and add a map package I've uploaded.

I saw that it is possible to search for data in 'my content' when you choose add data, but it will not find any data from my content.

Does anyone known if this is possible?

By map package do you mean layer package? You can't add layer packages that you've uploaded to your account. Just like you can't add zip files you've uploaded.

I also want to know about this. In ArcMap 10 I selected three feature classes in a data frame. Then File --> Create Map Package ...
I go through the steps and choose "Upload package to my ArcGIS online account" and it does it. The map package of feature classes with symbology shows up under My Content.

Now what? How can I make a map in ArcGIS online using this package of feature classes? What good is this function other than just storing something in the cloud?
Am I completely thinking about ArcGIS online wrong as to its functionality? Is it cloud storage next to a web mapping application with no connections between the two for map creation?

In the My Content screen, intuition says I should be able to check items uploaded then click the "Create Map" button and have them appear in a map. Instead I'm taken to a generic map of the world and asked to add data but searching My Content yields nothing.  Do I have to zip up shapes and manually upload them into an online map and create all the symbology all over again?

ArcGIS.com doesn't support displaying map or layer packages.  They are for transferring data between ArcGIS Desktop users.

However, with a subscription to ArcGIS.com, you can do the same thing by publishing your map as a web service. You would need ArcGIS Desktop 10.1 and have purchased an organizational subscription for ArcGIS Online.

Thanks,
