Esri R&D Center, New Delhi, India and ArcGIS Maritime's Madhu Hosuru have been conducting research into the world of Maritime Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

Aerial and satellite imagery works great with GeoAI. Madhu and the Team of SMEs were able apply the AI/ ML principles underwater!

These are bathymetric expressions, not side scan sonar images, used for identifying boat-like shapes from gridded #BAG data. Note that this type of bathymetry identification is indicative of what can be done with repeatable patterns in the high-resolution source grids, regardless of the type of object being identified. Often, the hardest part of a machine learning tool is finding a good data set with which to train the engine; in this case, the NY State data set was ideal, as so many boats were sunk in Hurricane Sandy and NOAA did a survey right after the destruction.
