Modern workflow for multi-year imagery mosaics: ArcMap → ArcGIS Pro / Enterprise / Image Server?

Hi everyone,

We have several years of imagery tiles that I used to process in ArcMap using the classic mosaic dataset workflow. It’s been a while since I’ve done this, and I’m looking to modernize the process using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Enterprise (Portal + Server). We also have an Image Server license, and I’m wondering if that might make things easier compared to how we used to do it in ArcMap.

Here’s what our setup looks like:

  • We maintain an enterprise geodatabase with raster datasets totaling close to 1 TB in size.

  • The imagery spans multiple years and was previously combined into mosaic datasets for organization-wide use.

  • Our environment includes Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, and Image Server licensing.

  • Back when we used ArcMap, I often had to leave the mosaic dataset process running over the weekend because it took that long to build overviews and process all the tiles.

Now that we’re fully in ArcGIS Pro and Enterprise, I’d like to make sure we’re following current best practices for managing and publishing large imagery collections.

A few questions for anyone who’s done this recently:

  1. What’s the recommended workflow in ArcGIS Pro / Enterprise for large, multi-year imagery collections (around 1 TB total)?

    • Still use mosaic datasets in an enterprise geodatabase and publish as an image service?

    • Cache as tiled imagery or serve dynamically?

  2. Any tips for migrating older ArcMap mosaic datasets into ArcGIS Pro?

    • Things like path management, building overviews, compression, or tiling scheme changes?

  3. Any performance recommendations for serving large imagery through Portal — for both web viewing and analysis (e.g., time slider or querying by year)?

I realize Image Server might be overkill for what we’re doing, but if it makes the management or publishing process easier, I’m open to going that route.

Appreciate any input, documentation links, or lessons learned from folks who’ve gone through this recently.
