In the June 2022.2 release of ArcGIS for Sharepoint, we have added a new feature which allows you to configure the location data stored in SharePoint lists or document libraries before adding it to the map. The ArcGIS for Excel component has this feature, and due to requests from SharePoint customers we have also added this feature to ArcGIS for SharePoint component.

This new feature allows you to specify the coordinates which are stored in your own columns, so you can match them to the correct XY or geometry field. Previously, ArcGIS for SharePoint could only identify certain column names for coordinates (such as X & Y, Longitude & Latitude, Long & Lat, ShapeX & Shape Y). With the June 2022.2 release, you will be able to map the coordinate function to any columns containing longitude and latitude or geometry. The workflow below shows the previous behavior in ArcGIS for Sharepoint,

Sharepoint list with coordinates:

Here’s a list created in Sharepoint and as you can see, the coordinates are stored in columns “coordinate_1” and “coordinate_2”,

The earlier version of Sharepoint, did not recognize the labels, or the column names and you couldn’t add the data to the map unless the column names are renamed to one of the recognized names or labels. You are left wondering why they are not able to add the Sharepoint list to the map. Unless you read the documentation, you would be left feeling frustrated.

With the ArcGIS for SharePoint release 2022.2, you will be able to map the coordinates to the custom labeled fields on a Sharepoint list.

In the Sharepoint list shown below, the Latitude and Longitude are stored in columns labeled “coordinate_1” and “coordinate_2” and, you can see below how easily the data can be added to the map.

In addition, you can use data with different spatial references or projections and, just select it when you geocode your data.  Supported notation formats are outlined  in the documentation : https://doc.arcgis.com/en/sharepoint/latest/install-and-configure/supported-notation-formats.htm
