Do licenses work the same for Power BI in Portal and ArcGIS Online? Secondly, if a user builds an item using an ArcGIS Power BI license and publishes that item to Power BI, will the map components work for all users or only for users with an ArcGIS for Power BI license?

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Greg,

You will need to request the Add On license at no cost for 10.8.x

10.7.1 should work as is

Hope that helps,

Andrew

Hello Dalton!

The licensing is VERY similar. Report Designers need to be Creator+ user types in both systems. If you add secured data to the visual, then the visual will honor that security model.

Eg. ArcGIS Online, shared to the organization... anyone with an account in the Org can view the layer in the visual.

Eg. ArcGIS Enterprise, shared with everyone, but is only exposed to the intranet, will work for everyone on your intranet. If the content is shared to a group, then a user account that needs to authenticate with Enterprise to access the item will be required.

Online has removed the dependency of the Power BI Add On license. So everything there works as expected with designers using a Creator+ account. With 10.8.X you will have to request the Add On license from Customer service for all your members at NO COST. Apply this to all members, and know that Creator+ in your Enterprise can design reports, everyone else can view.

Hope that helps,

Andrew

Does this answer apply in the same way to the Plus Subscription? Content created in PowerBI by a Creator+ with an ArcGIS Maps for Power BI subscription ($5 per month) can be viewed by any Portal user once the free Add On licenses are applied to Portal?

Hey there Jim,

The licensing model for ArcGIS for PowerBI has changed! Now to use ArcGIS for PowerBI, you only need to have an active AGOL / enterprise account per this blog: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/power-bi/mapping/arcgis-for-power-bi-whats-new/

In some sense, this is a welcome return to form, but I will add this... ArcGIS Enterprise still reqires the add on license. What the licensing team has done is allocate a large amount of licenses to your myEsri. To take advantage of these licenses, you will have to regenerate your portal json license file with these licenses allocated.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Do you mean that we need to reconfigure our portal license? and how we regenerate our portal json license file with these licenses allocated?

You will need to regenerate it in myEsri, and re-apply it to Portal.

So just to further clarify...

My organization currently has 10.7.1 and 10.8.1 installs of ArcGIS Enterprise.  To work with ArcGIS Maps for Power BI, I need to request a license for 10.8.1, and it will not work with 10.7.1?

Thanks much!

Did you get this to work via the instructions Andrew provided (e.g. talk to ESRI to provide the add on license)?
