I need some advice on the behaviour of domains observed in Field Maps when domains are applied at subtype level.

Hello Everyone,

I just need some advice here.

When working with Feature class where domains applied to subtypes, I found domain list is missing in the Field Maps.

For example, I have a feature class with three fields - one subtype field and two text fields named 'species' and 'condition'. 'Species' has three different domains applied, each relevant for a subtype. 'Condition' has one domain applied for all subtypes.

This is what the schema looks like:

  • The feature class is created to collect data in field using Field Maps. Therefore, I applied Unique value symbology using the subtype field "ObservationType", symbology classes correctly populated. However, I require to add one more field to symbology be it 'species' or 'condition'. As soon as I add another Field, the symbology classes disappear from the Symbology Pane.
  • This issue is reported in BUG-000173677 for ArcGIS Pro
  • Following the workaround suggested in the Bug-000173677, I added two points for two of the subtypes. This triggered the symbology classes to appear for the two subtypes. Then I published the feature class.

  •  I then created a Web map using this feature layer.
  • When I opened this Web map in Field Maps to collect data. I noticed my two symbology classes are available, I selected Flora,Banksia sp. option to collect point but I could not see any dropdown list or a description. The fields were only prepopulated with the default codes for subtype and domain.

I tested applying symbology using two fields on different datasets with similar schema but cannot get a dropdown list for domains in the Field Maps.

BUG-000170959 for ArcGIS Field Maps and BUG-000173994 for ArcGIS Field Maps report the issue.

Is this an expected behaviour?

I could not find any documented limitation around applying Unique Value symbology using a subtype field and an additional field, when domains are assigned at subtype level.

Am I missing anything?

I really appreciate if you can share any thoughts, advice or experience of similar issue.

I don't have any advice but we recently experienced something similar.
We had sub types/domains with a drop down box in our field maps inspections app, and after the recent AGOL update with templates we lost the drop down box, and got a text field instead.

We are still working through the issue with ESRI support, but there are further complications due to the way the data was uploaded into AGOL (through ArcMap and not Pro)

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Since this behaviour is observed from July 2024, I believe version of ArcGIS Online should not be an issue.

You were able to get a dropdown in Field Maps. Could you please share your workflow and give me some idea about the schema e.g., domain assignment etc.? This might be helpful for me to further understand if there anything missing in my workflow.

Thank you.
