In 10.0 we had the ArcGIS Explorer used as a client calling services to perform security risk analysis.
There were several messages raised by the client, the a service call which raised additional messages, then we got the 'Success' message and displayed the results.

After updating our servers to 10.1, we no longer get the messages marshalled back to the Explorer client.  It appears to work fine in  ArcMap but Explorer has definitely stopped displaying these messages.

Has anyone else experienced this and did you find a way to make it work??

ArcGIS for Server 10.1 Enterprise
ArcGIS Explorer 2500
Windows 8 on the desktop, Sql Server 2012 and Windows 2012 on the server.

I have since found the answer buried in a 5 minute post on an ESRI blog.  Their changes in 10.x has made the messages stop when you start using the background execution.  Turn it off and you get your messages back.  But then you also lose functionality that is needed.  Damned if you do.  Damned if you don't.  Good job ESRI!
