Build 1500 and IE 10?

Hi.  Our enterprise is using build 1500 of ArcGIS Explorer and this morning we've started to experience serious problems.  Symptoms include:

ArcGIS Explorer opens but the basemap won’t redraw as we pan around.  It just shows “Streaming…” at the bottom of the map for a while and then stops, but the basemap doesn’t fill in.  Eventually, the application becomes unresponsive and must be closed through the windows task manager.

Other times panning works but then AGX hangs when we try to change the basemap.

After killing the application with the task manager, AGX may or, more likely, may not open again - either hanging at the splash screen or partially open.

It seems to revolve around the basemaps, but it's hard to tell since it hangs up pretty quickly.

Everything was working fine at the end of last week.  The only thing I know that changed over the weekend is IE 10 was pushed out to our computers.  Does anyone know if that would affect ArcGIS Explorer in this (or any) manner?  Or have any thoughts in general?

Thanks,

Mary Ellen

Mary,

Which operation system are you using?  XP, WIn7, Win 8.1 ?

I took a look at this on Windows 8 and did not notice any issues.  It sounds like the http traffic to the services that supply the basemap are being disrupted.  It may be something to do with IE10 or perhaps another upgrade to you network?

If you use a web debugging tool like Fiddler Download Fiddler Web Debugging Tool for Free by Telerik‌  you may be able to see if the service requests are being blocked.

On Windows 7, IE10 and ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 2500 there is a known issue with ArcGISConnectionBin.exe related to Internet Explorer LAN Settings.  ArcGIS Explorer 1500 would not have this exact problem as ArcGISConnectionBin.exe is new for 2500.  However, it may be worth while to take a look at your LAN settings.

In 2D view ArcGIS Explorer will make the following requests

http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/services/World_Imagery/MapServer?mapname=Layers&layer=_allla...

Is this URL accessible on your network?

If possible you may want to try using the computer on a different network..  It may help in determining whether it is the network (IT department, Proxy Settings) or something specific to the computer.

Hi,

I just wanted to say thank you! for your suggestion to apply the same IE LAN Settings fix that works for the ArcGISConnectionBin.exe problem in build 2500.  That seems to be a solution in this case as well.

Best,

Mary Ellen
