I am looking for a good symbol to use for a local shipping port. The map will be part of my traffic and transportation report. The only thing I have that is remotely close would be an anchor. Or if anyone knows of a simple way for me to create my own symbol that would be helpful to. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Check this thread where I've published some good links to the mapping resources: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/53059-Symbol-set-for-Memorial-Highway-segments-and-or-points

Investigate thouroughly the Esri styles provided with ArcGIS, available from the Styles Manager (there are more then 30 I think). You can create an own symbol in any graphics software (CorelDraw, Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) and then import a raster file as a graphics which will be used as a symbol for your feature class (check carefully what formats are supported for picture symbols in ArcGIS).

If you are looking for really advanced symbols management in ArcGIS, consider using cartographic representations, there is a good tutorial on using the Marker Editor (p.15): http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/pdf/cartographic-representations-tutorial.pdf
