1. Is there a way to change the default setting so a new polygon layer that is added comes in as a colored outline (no fill) rather than a solid color?

2. In the color ramps for coloring polygons by attribute (i.e Categories->Unique Values), all the choices are for solid colors, none for outlines. Is there any way to generate a bunch of different colored outlines by unique value?

A couple things I've been wondering about for a long time that would save me lots of effort.

Currently both of these functions is not explicitly available in ArcGIS. However, there is an enhancement request to add both of these capabilities to ArcGIS in the future.

In addition, some of these ideas are also listed on the ArcGIS Ideas website:

In regards to the unique values for the outline color, one workaround could be to use the Feature to Line tool and then symbolize the line feature class using unique values.

Hope this workaround helps!
