Jagged Thick Offset Cartographic lines

I am using Cartographic lines to create offset lines that thicken as higher levels of traffic volume occur on a road network.  My problem is that as the lines thicken and the offset increases, the lines begin to show artifacts of jagged spikes at curve and line joins where the number of nodes increases.  What is the best way to reduce this effect to make the lines have a better appearance?

I tried the rounded end caps, but that did not help much because I found that most of the artifacts were appearing because of excessive points along the line.  I used the Simplify line tool with a 100 ft point reduction and that removed the artifacts.  However, that setting may have simplified some of the lines too much, so I will have to try other settings.  Anyway, that seems to be the tool I need to use for this particular map layer.
