I'm looking for a simple shapefile of just the 50 states, with Alaska and Hawaii "south" of the United States. Something like the attached image (which is for time zones).
I've spent a bunch of time trying to find it through Google, without success.
The ESRI data DVD has a states layer. Copy it and in the new one select Alaska and Hawaii and move them to wherever you want in an edit session. Then make your map.
Alternately add additional data frames for Alaska and Hawaii in your preferred location in Layout along with the larger data frame of the continental US, and then zoom in on those states in their respective data frames. Remove their Data Frame boundaries and otherwise change how they display.
