We had ArcGIS Desktop 10.3.1 installed on Windows 7 machines. The machines were upgraded to Windows 10 (64 bit). Now many of the old MXD's created prior to the upgrade will not open and crashes ArcMap.

User is starting on the MXD by double clicking. The same MXD can be opened on machines that have Windows 10,.but had ArcGIS Desktop 10.3.1 installed 'after' the upgrade.

Ideas are welcome.

Hello,

You can also use

https://community.esri.com/thread/78692

Reset you local profile and try to open older mxd file.

you can also use mxd doctor tool to check error in  your mxd files.

Thanks.

This would be my recommendation as well.  Although this link says to re-set your Normal.mxt file.  I would recommend closing at arcgis applications, re-naming the entire ESRI folder encompassing the Normal.mxt file, and then open ArcMap again.

When opening ArcMap for the first time, open it as a blank template and then open the saved mxds from there.

Does ArcMap crash right now when opened as a blank template?  Are you having any issues with the other arcgis applications (ex; ArcCatalog) as well?

ArcMap works fine and you can create and save new MXDs. Old MXD's created before the Windows 10 upgrade continue to crash. MXD Doctor says they are fine and the MXD can be opened without issue on other machines. This effects all uses on  the machine so it is not a user profile issue.

I think the GAC and Registry is not properly migrated during the OS in place upgrade.

Repair of the installation does not fix the issue. We have had to uninstall all ArcGIS Desktop and then resinstall from scratch.

Just want to verify a complete uninstall / reinstall solves your problem?

Do all mxds crash on this machine or just select mxds?  If just select mxds, do they all have SDE database connections?

Can these mxds be opened without error by having another user open the mxd on the problematic computer (just wondering if its a user profile issue)?

other users have the same issue with the affected MXD's. MXD Doctor does not fix anything when run.

Then try to install it again or repair installed version .

Hello,

One issue that was identified and 'fixed' some of the MXD's is related to the defaul printer setting and mapped printers.

After an in-place upgrade to Windows 10 some printer drivers are not upgraded, this does not ensure they actually work with Windows 10 since in our case we moved from 32-bit to 64-bit operating system. Thus if you have a MXD that references an unsupported printer driver the application may hang or crash when attempting to open the MXD -since it trys to read the printer page size information from the printer. Things to verify are (1) is a working default printer is set at the Windows level and (2) have the printer drivers for your other printers been upgraded to Win 10 compliant versions -especially with your 36" HP plotters :-).
