Category Selector Grouped Values error from views/query layers

I am trying to add a category selector using grouped values from a map service that contains SQL database views / query layers.  When I choose the query layer from the map service, I get "No Data" results for the dropdown.  Same result for any of the category fields in the query layer, string or number types.  

When I click on the "Show data table" option, it says "No feature available".  I can load categories however and override as seen in the image below.

However, the same process works for if I export the data and create a feature class from the query layer.  

Anyone else with similar behavior?
