Different Capabilities for Layers in Feature Service

Is it possible to have different capabilities for each layer in a hosted feature service? For example, in a Hydrant inspection map with related tables, could the Hydrants be capable of Updates, while the tables are not capable of updates? I have had to symbolize the inspection status within the Hydrants which requires allowing updates. However, I would like to have updates turned off for the inspection and maintenance tables so they cannot be edited once submitted. If not possible through publishing the service, can it be done via rest services? hosted featureservice

Greetings Janet,

If you have a web map that you are bringing into Collector for ArcGIS, you should be able to make just one layer editable while the others are not.

With this in mind, the table is now included in the edit settings you choose for this layer. Here are your options for setting edit settings:

So you can choose attributes only or update features. Based on my testing, it looks like "Update features" allows attributes that are associated with point, polygon or line features to be edited but not the related records of the table.

You can also just select what layers are editable at the web map level. This video shows what that looks like:

Also keep in mind there is now Collector for ArcGIS (Classic) and Collector for ArcGIS. So when searching the documentation, be mindful of which of these are reading up on.

This is the documentation I have found that is helpful in navigating related tables and editable layers.

Thanks for your reply, Andrew. Are your screenshots from ArcGIS Online? I am working with Portal and I don't see the same options.

Greetings Janet,

This was in ArcGIS Online. However, Portal for ArcGIS should also provide these options *if* you have ArcGIS Server with a managed database (ArcGIS Datastore) that is federated with Portal for ArcGIS.

In ArcGIS Online we handle all of this for you. What version of Portal for ArcGIS are you currently running?

Andrew,

Our portal is currently being upgraded from 10.1 to 10.7. These options don't appear in either version as far as I can tell.

Hi Janet,

Portal for ArcGIS 10.1 will not show these options. Version 10.7 should show these options.

The following documentation outlines this functionality at your version.

https://enterprise.arcgis.com/en/portal/latest/use/edit-features.htm

There are a few things we should check on here:

  • -Is the layer you are targeting hosted?
  • -What do you see when you go to edit setting page?
  • -What kind of layer are we working with here? Raster? Vector?

Alternatively, we can open a ticket with Esri Support to ensure everything went smoothly with the upgrade. Being able to work with Esri Support will ensure that you can get everything in a connected and healthy state post upgrade.

In lieu of a support ticket, perhaps a screenshot of your setting page?

I will do me best to figure this out here. You have the power, we just need to unlock it!

Hopefully we can get you editing like a pro here Janet.
