Collector | Map download failed. Unable to create replica.

I've been looking high and low for a solution to a recent problem I've been having with Collector. I created two services (1 editable, 1 not) and a map to be used with Collector. Everything is hosted in the cloud using our company's Enterprise account (not Server). I worked on this a lot early last week and late the week before and still cannot get it to work properly.

The issue is offline use of the map.

When I log into the iPad, I can access the map and edit the features while online but when I try to download it to the device for offline use, I get the following error:

Map Download Failed

Unable to download the map

Unable to create replica. Please check your parameters. Create replica internal error.

I've been looking all over GeoNet for this exact error but cannot find it. However, I have tried several things including Global Id creation and deleting and recreating the relationship table for attachment.

I am using a File Geo database with 3 or 4 domains (very simple) and no subtypes. There is one point feature class that I use in one service for editing. It contains about 150 points to which the field crews will navigate and make updates. There are a few other feature classes that I use in another service and only allow query capabilities.

A couple other things to note:

- No one else in my organization is having any problem. I have shared the map and all services with a Group that I created and the members of the group can download and sync without issue.

- The XY coordinate system I'm using is GCS WGS 1984 for all feature classes.

- I have not upgraded to ArcMap 10.3 -- still running 10.2.

We're going into the field late next week and I'd love to sort this out for my confidence level -- this is the first time I've used Collector and I'd like to it to be as flawless for the field crew as possible.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I had been receiving another error, after I had downloaded a map for offline use.  I could edit existing features, but when I tried to add an additional feature Collector would crash. (Mind you this only happened on android but not IOS!)   My local ESRI distributor suggested we take off each layer in the map and see which layer is 'causing the problem' .  In this trial (which I think is a real waste of my time since it seems like Collector is at fault and not my service) I took off all but one layer.  Everything worked.  Now I have added a new layer and I got this exact error as listed above when I am trying to download!!!  In my case it must not be the wifi connection in my case since not 3 minutes before I was able to download another map using the same wifi connection.  Very strange.  So far our organization has yet to really use the collector until I can guarantee it can work offline.  This was the main selling point that ESRI pushed for us when we went the collector route.  Now I am seriously reconsidering this decision with all the problems it has caused us.

But nice to know its not just us!

I also had problems of Collector on Android crashing. I've now given up on Android and only use iOS.

I also tried removing layers from my map. The map I was trying to download had both layers that were to be edited in the field and other layers that weren't to be edited. I never had any success in downloading this map. I removed all the layers not to be edited. Then I had success, although intermittent due to our poor wifi network.

Our organization has used Collector but started developing custom applications when limitations were encountered. It's very frustrating because Collector is supposed to be very much "out-of-the-box" and for simple projects or efforts, that's just what we need. I'm impressed by the technology but would be happier if it was less buggy/frustrating -- impressive technology that can't be used is, well, useless.

Hey Rosemary,

As has been noted in earlier replies on this thread, it's possible that the network connection is at play when a dataset fails to download. To better understand what may have caused the download to fail, we can set up Fiddler as a proxy to capture all HTTP traffic between your services and Collector. The steps to do this can be found here: Configure Fiddler to Capture Web Traffic from an iPhone/iPad | Support Services Blog

Intermittent issues are difficult to track down, but if it were an issue with the download request or the dataset, we would likely see more consistency in the failure. Also, are your services hosted on ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS for Server? What capabilities are enabled for the service (Add, Delete, Update, Sync, Query)? What is the version of Collector you are currently using?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your response. For the most part, the syncing has been working fine for the field crew. I haven't tried to download the map for offline use under my user name. They were getting the Invalid Token error a couple nights ago but we think that was due to slow WiFi speeds; when they used a hotspot it worked fine.

The service is hosted on AGOL. All capabilities are enabled. I know on the iPads in my office, we upgraded our version of Collector to the latest. I'm not sure about the two that are actually currently in the field.

One thing just came up -- the team synced up fine last night and I was able to view what they'd synced on my iPad at home. Right now, I'm trying to look at the service through AGOL and it's giving me a json&token error. I'm really concerned! Help! All I wanted to do is export the feature class to a GDB for "backup". I've done it the last two days without a problem and now this.

Hey Rosemary,

Where do you receive the token errors? Is this on an iPad or on your desktop? Could you run Fiddler to capture HTTP traffic while you are interacting with this service, to see if we can gather more information about the error you've received?

Thanks,

Scott

Hey there - I just got off the phone with an ESRI rep and tried something that worked. I was unable to download map for offline use (getting the Unable to download the map. Unable to create replica. Please check your parameters. Create replica internal error) despite following all instructions to prepare my map for offline use. I've been sharing my content to an organization and though my Web Map was shared my Feature Layer and Service Definition was not. After selecting these components and sharing them to my organization, I was then able to successfully download the map for offline use. Not sure if this will apply to others experiencing this problem, but I thought I would put the information out there. Best of luck, Patrick.
