So i found the attached map online of Kosovo and i was trying to align it to the world imagery, ie similar to how state of Indiana aligns in its "right place" below:

I have no idea what edits i should make to the shapefile to make it fit like this.

It seems the correct projection to be used is ETRS_1989_Kosovo_Grid.

Right-click the shapefile in ArcCatalog > Properties. Click on "XY Coordinate System Tab". Select the following Coordinate Syatem. (Projected Coordinate Systems > National Grids > Europe > ETRS 1989 Kosovo Grid). Click OK.

Add the shapefile to a blank ArcMap session. Add the desired BaseMap to ArcMap.

You need to attach all the files with the same name (not just the .shp file). You will see multiple files like the image below.

Could you zip all the components of the shapefile , and attach the zipped file again.

I just did that. See "Kosovo_.zip" in the original thread. Thanks!

I would try to use the shapes or file geodatabase from this page:

Download | Global Administrative Areas

They have Kosovo as well. Maybe they are accurate enought for you - as I can remember the coordinate system is WGS 84

It works! You are a life saver, Jayanta!

If you are missing a *.prj file, that could be the problem, since it is needed to project the file from one coordinate system to another.

The prj file

PROJCS["NAD83 / UTM zone 16N"

is for UTM zone 16

which isn't in Kosovo by any stretch of the imagination

You are right Dan. The coordinate system should be ETRS_1989_Kosovo_Grid, for the given values of XY extent.

Jayanta, I suspect an old *prj was repurposed by just changing the name of the prj
