When I use the Pipe Jumping Tool to represent pipe cross overs or cross unders, it works sometimes, but most of the time I get the following pop up:

"esri.Arc"
The construction cannot be completed with the given chord distance

I get this message with many lines of different lengths, sometimes the tool works on 10 foot lines, other times it does not work on 150 foot lines. Sometimes it works at 1:100 scale, other times it does not work at 1:50 scale. It appears not to be related to line (pipe) length or map scale.

My data is projected in CA State Plane Zone 3 NAD83 US Feet. I used the default precision settings when I created this feature class.

Any ideas on why this message pops up and does create the cross over or cross under?

thanks,

Tim Hayes
GIS Manager
San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant

I was fighting with this problem as well, I changed the jump distance to something much smaller and it started working properly. I suspect that the segment ArcGIS was trying to create was larger than the available room, due to proximity to the end of the line.

I changed the jump distance to a teeny-tiny value, and still got the error. However, not all the time. About 90% of the time the tool works very well.

I was fighting with this problem as well, I changed the jump distance to something much smaller and it started working properly.

Reason is the distance that the jump measure is from vertex to vertex (double click on the line and delete the vertex next to the jump) and the tool it will work fine without changing the jumping distance.

All,
I identified the issue. The error is caused when more than one intersecting line with the main line. So when it goes to make the jump on the second line, it has an error because of the first jump. I added code to handle the error and present a warning. I found that some odd geometry can occur in certain situations. I made the fix in the 10 release of the template. I also merged the changes into the 9.3.1 version. Attached is the updated DLL, you will need to replace the old one with this one.

Updated DLL 7-7-2010 - Unrelated Bug fix

Michael,
When I download the .dll it says it is corrupt? Can you re-post?
