I think this is a case where you just do whats best for you.

I was just wondering how other people were managing water areas. We have many hundreds of lakes. Some very large and containing many islands covering multiple townships. Right now we have a Tax Parcel Polygon that for the most part is broken at the section level to fill the holes in the lakes. Those polygons have a parcel Id of "WATER". I know there is something to be said for having contiguous data with no holes but this seems to be adding hundreds of thousands of points/lines in our fabric. Also, because of the complexity of the lakes it is difficult to merge each lake into 1 polygon. Does everyone fill the water areas with a parcel type that follows the shoreline? Are there advantages/disadvantages to doing it one way or the other?
