convert labels to annotation

In arcmap, you have the ability to right click on a layer that is labeled and select 'Convert Labels to Annotation'. You then get the ability to specify if you want the annotation to be feature linked or if you want to append an existing feature class.

I don't see a way of doing this with python? I'm hoping the functionality exists, but I can't find it.

Currently, there doesn't appear to be a way to convert labels to an annotation feature class using python. However, there has been an enhancement request logged for this functionality:

NIM003923 'Create Featureclass' tool should have an options to create Annotation or Dimension classes, to match ArcCatalog's New Feature Class functionality.
