Does anyone push their Esri data to Intergraph I/CAD?

I'm trying to find people to commiserate with who are Esri users who were tasked to roll map data to Intergraph's I/CAD system. I have heard snippets about their new I/Map Editor toolbar that supposedly works with ArcMap now, but haven't found a whole lot of information on it. There is no GeoNet in Intergraph-land...

Anyone?

Kimberly- I don't have the answer, but in the very near future I may be able to empathize: one of the agencies I contract to is considering Intergraph as its next CAD....

(Isn't, or wasn't Waukasha a Spillman shop?)

Yes, *used* to be Spillman. We moved to Intergraph a couple years ago and all and all it's been a good move. However, learning GeoMedia after using Esri for so many years was like driving a Chevette after owning a Cadillac. And finding people in the same boat is difficult, there isn't nearly the amount of camaraderie and sharing on the Intergraph side, it seems. Or at least, I haven't found it...

We have been moving ESRI data into Microstation for several years. We're not moving database information, but adding CAD pen table symbology (color, Level, etc.) to the ESRI attribute table for plotting county maps in Microstation. We have a developed a model for the process. We'd be happy to share it.

Hi,

I also move our GIS data from ESRI to Intergraph's I/CAD. I currently use FME and GeoMedia for that work but am also looking to move to the new tool for ESRI. I've heard through the grapevine that it's still too new and that it would be best to wait a bit before trying it.

I'm glad to see this topic as a thread and I'm sure I'll be here often!

We are also maintaining data in ESRI and moving it over to Intergraph CAD with I/Map Editor. I think there is a CAD version (9.3, maybe?) pre-requisite for the I/Map Editor toolbar, so we are waiting on our 911 center to get us a trial. My colleague was the one in the meeting, so I don't have all the details, but will try to keep you updated.

And, yes, working with Geomedia is very different than ESRI. We struggle most with labeling and extent because of the crazy process to create a new SVG symbol. However, I noticed that ArcGIS Pro seems to handle data connections like Geomedia does -- as in you have to connect to all your sources in each project.

We've been working with the I/Map Editor tool bar for a couple months now. And the labeling issues continue. Labels are run off of annotation feature classes and one of the most frustrating issues we've been having is dealing with the road shields. In ArcMap the shield labels look fine, but something happens during the publish process causes them to have large text and a tiny shield background. Has anyone done this successfully?

I'm currently working on a large initial map role using only ESRI and the I Map Editor toolbar. Its been a long road, used to use GeoMedia even though I'm an ESRI shop.

I'm also having issues with the labeling, specifically shields at this point as well so I share your misery. I'm currently waiting for an email back with suggestions from Hex.

Will be watching this topic for updates from everyone.

Have you guys talked to the Hexagon 'gis' guy about this? I've just been sitting in the first two map build classes recently, so I can't really answer your question. Seems like a reoccurring theme that needs to be dealt with....

Edited a little later: in the classes I've sat through, the instructor mentioned using outside map sources for visualization purposes. For CAD functionality you have to process the data into the Hexagon format: a process not unlike the orginal Spillman outfiles or the Versaterm VGI tool. At any rate, would consuming an ArcGis server map or AGOL etc be a viable option in addition to the CAD map?

We've been stuck in a bit of a loop with the Hexagon mapping team, working through some higher priority issues (i.e. getting out of county routing to work). They've not had anything helpful to say about the shield issue to date.

At the 9.3 version of Intergraph CAD they have, essentially, 2 mapping windows - the traditional one that displays the .map file and is used for verification and what is called the multi-source map. The multi-source map can consume services and the extent can be adjusted to match that of the map window. I think the general idea is to use the multi-source map for reference layers and preserve the .map file for functional layers. However, based on the feedback from our dispatchers, there is a minimum level of labeling that is desirable for the functional layers and route shields are one of them.

Oh, and we've noticed that there seems to be a scale limitation in the multi-source map. I don't remember off hand what the particular scale level is, but the upshot is that they can't zoom in as closely on the imagery as they were previously able to. We've got a ticket in with Hexagon on that as well.

Multi source- that's term I was forgetting. I'm a lousy cartographer; which ever side of the brain that's artistic, well, those are the cells I killed off back in the 70's. My dispatchers are used to simple maps, which is what I hope to give them in the .map side of the house, and then wow them with a multi source map.

Joining this conversation a bit late. Hoping to keep this thread from dying as so may cross platform discussions seem to do for ESRI and Hexagon/Integraph/Geomedia. I also come from ESRI background and just last year took a position that required me to work with both ESRI and Geomedia for map rolls to a CAD system.

Wondering if anyone here has any updates to the threads above or have found a way to drive a Chevette as well as a Cadillac and learn to live with both.

Just gotta ask: which platform is the Cadillac?

My solution was completely self-serving: I left my 9-1-1 job and went to work in a 100% ESRI shop. (Best career move in all my years!) From what I hear from my former colleagues, Hexagon continues to disappoint both as a CAD and mapping software.

ESRI is the "Cadillac" in my view and I think for the original poster also...... Lucky you Yes I find Hexa support and platform V disappointing in both realms. Sad to know the backside of all the services that are important fire, ems, law must rely on such mediocrity

Can anyone provide me with a resource on how to best convert an Esri GDB into an Intergraph GeoMedia format? I'm finding very little on this topic. Will the Esri Interoperability Extension do the job as a quick convert? Or will I need to develop custom tools to do so? Thanks!
