I'm new to Arc not GIS and I can't seem to do what I think is a fairly basic operation.

I have a polygon and many lines that intersect it. I want to remove the portions of lines that fall inside the polygon. How do I do this?

I've tried using Clip in the editor tool bar but that only seems to work on polygon-polygon overlaps.

I've tried using Clip(Analysis) but that removes the parts outside of the polygon.

For grids yes, otherwise, create the polygon, union the result and delete the unwanted portion is perhaps one way to go, otherwise this can all be done in an edit session, but less convenient if you have many areas to "mask"
