Strategic Initiatives: Capacity Building and Research Helping to Achieve Sustainable Development

Hello, my name is William, and I have a long story to tell. My 3 teenaged grandsons introduced me to the BEEN app, and were bragging about having been 30 and 40 countries that they have visited before they have become adults. I was impressed, downloaded the app, and with their help established that during my career with the United Nations, and US government, I ticked off 115 countries, but was not able to find 4 other countries that were no longer here on earth.

I explained that I had traveled to 60+ countries, and in 11 cases worked or gone to school for more than a year (with 4 years being the longest I worked in any single country). It was all about human and long term development assistance. I have been a Peace Corps Volunteer, a United Nations Volunteer, and am now a retired UN professional officer.

Today, I continue to be involved in sustainable development efforts, not only in my country, but in countries around the globe. Mapping and spatial analysis is critical to speeding up the pace countries achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and if you would like to be involved, I can help finding entryways for resume building engagements for those interested. ESRI leader Jack Dangermond recently spoke at a Ministerial Workshop reported by SDGs Today and the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). Framing the Dialogue for the 4th International Conference on Finance for Development (Scroll down to click on the link to his 2 minute presentation)

I urge everyone interested in using your GIS skills for peaceful development to spend time exploring the rest of the SDG Today - SDG17: Partnerships to Achieve the Goal(s). Lots of high paying positions available and lots of places that need knowledge management pros to get involved.
