Where do you work and what is your role?

Hi, I'm Thiru (aka Thirumurugan, if you want a long, Tamil name!), currently working as a GIS Consultant contracting for a local government authority in sunny Queensland, Australia. My current role involves publishing web services and administering ArcSDE to deliver optimal performance to Staff and Public.

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

My big success so far this year has been migrating our weed mapping staff to use AGOL on iPads so they can finish their mapping workflow digitally. Last year, they have been meddling with paper maps, notepads and calling / traveling to Office to check maps on the Desktop. Many more teams lined up to convert their workflows using AGOL and ArcGIS Desktop 🙂

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

My expertise is Writing to reach masses through blog posts. I guess I would be sharing my tips and tricks with you all (and expect to learn from your posts too!).

Where do you work and what is your role?

Hello from the City of Port Alberni, BC (Can). I am Roman Frank. Currently, I am working with our Economic Development on a pilot project using Community Analyst. I have been hired on a temporary basis to the role of 'Community Analyst'.

I look forward to hearing from - especially those of you with experience, tips and tricks to realize the full potential of this tool.

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

I am using Community Analyst, and learning that I am also able to use ArcGIS Online as part of this project. This has only begun, and gathering data for analysis is my primary duty right now. Recalling my ArcGIS skills would have to be my success so far.

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

I had worked with GIS from 1995-early 2000's for our Treaty department in Ahousaht, BC. ArcView, ArcGIS, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst. I have had to play catch-up however, considering how long it's been. I am glad that the basics remain the same.

I also work with our I.T department here in Port Alberni.

Where do you work and what is your role?

Hello, my name is Matt Elbert, from the big city of Williston, ND. Currently, I am working with the City of Williston Public Works & Engineering Department as GIS Coordinator. I've used Geonet before as a forum for advice, tips/tricks, and problem-solving.

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

I was just hired at the end of 2017 to my role as GIS coordinator, and I have hit the ground running using a litany of ArcGIS tools (as well as refreshing AutoCAD skills). I am looking to dive into the Spatial Analyst tool set a bit deeper in the coming year.

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

I have been working with GIS tools since my college days, and have a fair bit of experience working with ArcGIS. I look forward to helping improve the existing set of maps currently offered, and expanding the palette of online tools the city uses.

Hello GeoNet Community! I am very excited to be a part of this community.

Where do you work and what is your role?

I am Srikanth, currently a Master's Student at the University of Detroit Mercy. Doing my Master's in Environmental Engineering. I am learning GIS from 15 months both at College and home with the help of Professors, various Communities, and blogs. I started using ArcMap which was the first experience I had as I took a GIS course during my first semester at College. And since then, I found it very useful and a great tool that could be integrated into any Project and no matter what subject you deal with!

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

I am currently doing my Thesis on a Superfund NPL site in Indiana. I am integrating GIS to my thesis to represent various contaminant plumes, the location of monitoring wells and to bring effect to the materialized content that is normally found anywhere.

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

There is no singular topic to say I am an expert in but I like to learn various subjects no matter what my core field is. Everything could be used in every other subject or field. we just need to find how it fits or moreover how we could make use of the topic to introduce into another field ourselves.

I actually am an expert in Nanotechnology and would like to see how GIS could be used at Nanoscale. Interesting? I think it is and would like any suggestions to start with.

Where do you work and what is your role?

My name is Bradford Dean, GIS manager to the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake, located on the reserve of Kahnawake, Quebec, Canada

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

My training was on ArcGIS desktop but I am working with ArcGIS Pro, there I have been working with address symbols and locators and using remote sensing satellite images from USGS.

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

I have been trained in GIS and remote sensing at the University of Concordia, Montreal. The city is literally across the river from Kahnawake. Kahnawake is new to the GIS technology and it is my hope to help bridge knowledge of GIS use to local Indigenous knowledge and make great maps with meaning for our community.

My name is Eric Lomelí and I am the GIS Supervisor at Bexar County (Texas).

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

We recently contracted esri professional services to conduct a GIS system architecture assessment. The recommendations of the report is propelling us towards cloud-ready solutions.

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

I have been working with GIS since 2000. I have a M.S. in GIS (Management Track) from the University of Redlands (California). I can help the community by providing lessons learned from my 11 year experience in Local Government.

Where do you work and what is your role?

My name is Gemma Stubbs and I'm a GIS Specialist working at Stantec in the UK, providing support to an Environmental Compliance and Sustainable Development team.

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

I've recently rolled out some basic GIS training using ArcGIS for desktop 10.5 to colleagues that had no experience of the software, with an end goal to enable them to use a template I created that brings together multiple open source data sets and client data, to help inform environmental assessments. This has massively improved efficiencies in the assessment production.

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

I've been working with GIS, mainly ESRI products for the last 16 years in a variety of roles over the years, ranging from cartographic roles, to data management roles all with an environmental emphasis. After a few years of being in project management roles, I'm back to being technical, and I'm looking forward to connecting with the community.

Where do you work and what is your role?

Hi my name is Joe Flint. I have been retired for the past 4 years.I was a programmer for an insurance company. My interest in GIS comes from my hobby, Genealogy. In the study of family history we have tools that let us record what and when something happened in the past. We can even record where something happened as text. What I want to do with GIS is to analyze the relationship between places. For example Why did John Smith marry Jane Doe? In the 19th century your prospective partner was probably within walking or at least horseback distance. What I am trying to do is Historical GIS on an individual basis.

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

My greatest GIS success this year has been finding ArcGIS for Personal Use. I started out with Google Earth. I soon realized that there was a lot of data out there in shape file format. I tried a free GIS and then a middle priced GIS not wanting to spend the money for ArcGIS. Finding that I could get the real deal for a very affordable price was great. One of the landmarks that can persist through time are rivers and streams. I now have a map populated from the USGS NHD of all the named streams in the USA. I now understand why one ancestor has been reported living in two counties at once. The deed says he lived on Naked Creek and there are two Naked Creeks one in each county.

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

While I started out as a mainframe COBOL programmer, the last 15 years of my career where spent working in Visual Basic and especially C# and SQL Server. I am hoping to use my programming skills to automate the process of displaying the land purchased in the US public land states by specific individuals.

I haven't, but I anticipate much GIS success to come now that I'm part of GeoNet!

I have a good amount of knowledge of the UC and Student Assistantship as well as a degree in psychology

Where do you work and what is your role?

I work for the Transportation Security Administration in Idaho. What is my role? That is kind of tough to answer. I am the SME for ArcGIS for TSA in the state which sounds pretty impressive, but I am self-taught and at this time my department/group is one (me).

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

I created a map for all the TSA employees in the state so we can track how natural disasters or events may affect them. Currently the threat is wildfires so I closely monitor the wildfire activity and see if any employees are/will be affected. I am still working on “standing up” the GIS group here.

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

As I indicated, I am self-taught (with the help of some online resources). Thank you Coursera! My expertise is that I am a digger! I tend to like to get into the nuts and bolts of things and how they work. I am fairly skilled at finding answers.

My favorite place?

There isn’t just one. Anyplace there are a few trees and a lake or stream is fine with me!
