topic Maplex at 10.1 creates overset text when exporting to .ai in Mapping Questions

I've been using Arcview 10.0 with the maplex extension to export maps into Adobe Illustrator (CS4). I deal mainly with line features, and use a curved offset type label with the standard aerial font. After upgrading to ArcGIS Basic 10.1 with the built in Maplex, I'm getting overset text in my exported .ai/.pdf files (with the little red crosses and letters missing from my labels).

I've played with all the settings in Maplex, but can't figure out a solution. Any suggestions before I move back to 10.0?

I am having the same problem. ArcGIS 10.1 to Illustrator CS5. Text Tweaker was suggested but didn't fix the problem in Illustrator.
Very frustrating! I have a map with LOTS of text. Exporting or printing to a pdf, then opening the pdf in Illustrator and saving as an ai file seems to work, but I am concerned there are problems I can't see due to the complexity of the map.
