I can't add a basemap to my arcmap document

I am currently working in ArcMap 10.7.1 and I am trying to add a base map to my map in the layout view. I clicked right on "layers" and clicked add a new base map. However, there is no option to actually add which type of base map I want, it just shows up in my data frame as "new basemap layer". Has anyone else ran into this and know what to do in order to add a base map to their map?

Hello Andrea,

I don't know if you solved your question yet, but there are two ways in which I add a base map to Arcmap.

1. click on the downward arrow next to the add data button and then select add base map OR
2. click again but this time choose add data from ArcGIS online and search in base map

The basemap layer you are adding is something quite different from what I think you want to achieve (Working with basemap layers—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop ).

Claudia's answer is the way to go here.
