topic Templates for Shared Use in Mapping Questions

I would like to save an ArcMap10 template in a location on a network drive that will be accessible to people within our department. When a user opens the template by simply opening the map, I'd like them to not be able to save over the map - so the map opens as "Untitled."

I know this is possible by saving to the built-in or specified template location and then having the user open the map via the "New" dialogue in ArcMap, but I do not feel this is practical - in order to have the templates be more accessible by all, I feel they should work by opening them directly.

Am I missing something here, or is this something that you simply can't do with ArcGIS 10?
