Grid Index Features Question

I'm using the Grid Index Features tool to build a grid that follows an irregular polyline featureclass. And then using the gridded polygons in a data page driven layout. The image below shows the irregular line in dashed blue.

I am entering a polygon grid origin other than the one specified by ArcMap when the tool first displays, and then in filling out the other fields on the page, I'm good until I get to this point - i.e. I want to change the number of columns from 5 (as shown) to 6.

When I change the value to 6, the polygon height and polygon width values change from 7 and 9 inches to values in the thousands as shown below.

What is causing this and how can I add the one extra column while maintaining the original polygon width?

My ArcGIS version is 10.2.1

are those the numbers when you changed the grid to 6 (my guess). Did you then go back an reselect inches? (don't assume that they are still in inches)... better choose, cm, then back to inches and see what you get.

Hi Dan, yes I've tried re-selecting the map units with no change in outcome. Just tried it again by going to cm and back without any success.

The numbers are too close to the old ones...offset by a couple probably insignificant decimals...

Does it print properly?

What happens if you toggle off the use page units section?

Grasping here... I am wondering if you were at the same view extent when you made the changes, I am assuming everything is in the same coordinate system, etc etc.

Dan, I've given those a try with no success - including printing.

I've come up with a work-around which keeps me moving forward but it does add a few extra steps to the process. I'll let the Grid Index tool run, bring up the result and then eyeball a graphic box around polyline based on where I want the line to fit in the resulting grid. I'll convert the graphic into a feature and then re-run the Grid Index tool using the new feature as my input feature. Then I'll go into the attribute table of the new grid, delete any grid elements the polyline doesn't fall in, and finally edit the page numbers column to show a continuous sequence.

After that I insert the new Grid Index into the Data Pages and I'm good. Unfortunately all the manual lintervention slows my turnaround time, but this gets me a clean output.

I'd like to keep this open a bit to see if someone else chimes in with a suggestion. . . .
