topic How to select from overlapping polygons? in Geoprocessing Questions

Hi,

I have a polygon dataset which have around 70% overlapping polygons. The overlap is designed to store data for a variety of polygon types. For instance, 5% of a polygon has Aspen trees and 95% of that polygon has Willow trees. I want to use one polygon per one type of data. I would like to see the polygons that have the maximum percentages of tree cover. My new shapefile will be free from overlapping polygons and each polygon will have a single attribute of percent of tree cover. I was thinking of selecting by attributes; what should be the syntax? Does ArcGIS have any 'If' function? How might I have this question solved?

Thanks for considering,
Sharif
