The original file that needs to be clipped had about 19,000 records and I think because of its size the clip would never complete (i.e. it appeared to stall during the run for hours at a time without making any progress). So to try and reduce the number of records I ran a dissolve for the attribute that I was interested in to combine a number of disjointed polygons into one. After the dissolve I have about 4,000 records.
