topic Generate Near Table returns empty table in Geoprocessing Questions

I'm trying to use the Generate Near Table tool to determine the how far each location in a point layer is from a layer that consists of a single line. This worked when I had an unprojected set of points, (GCS only specified) but this gave me distances in decimal degrees. When I go and reproject this point to convert them into UTMs (same projection as the line layer) and run generate near table it the process takes much longer and returns a table with no records. Right now both the points and the line are in NAD 1983 Harn.
One thing I do notice is under the properties of both layers the line is a feature class and the points are listed as shapefile. Not exactly sure what the difference is or if that would be a problem.

If you have not done so already I would definitly convert the shapefile to a feature class and try the tool again.
