Batch export by attribute (single shapefile to multiple)

Hi,

Ok, so I have a 10m contour dataset of the entire state of Tasmania, I need to break this down into a few hundred smaller datasets (each the size of a 25k topographical map). The only way i know of doing this in arcmap is by selecing by attribute (and then choosing which map grid to export) and then exporting that as a seperate dataset, and then repeating the process. My question is, Is there a batch tool for this kind of process, or a way of automating this in model builder, or am I going about this completely wrong?

if it is an attribute query that is being used to split the file into separate shapefiles, then check Split Layers By Attribute (for version 10) at
