A generic error with 'Spatial join', why?

Hi, after i've used the tool 'Spatial join' in order to spatially join attributes from a line feature to other point feature, recently I get a 999999 generic error when I select 'Closest'. However, these error does not always happen and seldomly I manage to do this. I have used this tool for more than a year and I don't know what could have happen. Recently I upgraded to 10.4.1, but this problem proceed.

I don't know if this relate to another generic Error i get with 'Extract multi-values to points'.

Can anyone help?

Most commonly these problems are related to the coordinate systems of the datasets.

Are they all in the same projected system?

They are. I still get this error, while a new layer is generated, but it's empty.

By the way,

when I select 'Intersect' or 'Within a distance', I do not get an error.

the within a distance of and closest need a distance specifier... are you specifying one in both cases?

I suspect that the difference is that both require a distance. The closest returning the one location with the specified distance and the 'within a distance of' returns all within the specified distance.

And what format is your data in?

Shapefiles, file geodb... ?

Have you checked / repaired the geometry?

Hi Dan, thank you for your answer.

These two options do require to define specified distance, but it's optional.

In both cases, when I specify distance, or not, it fails.

Do both the datasets and the data-frame have same Coordinate System?

what is it?

what distance do you specify?

I do not specify a certain distance (it's optional).

try one... perhaps one that you think some locations would meet the criteria... that is what I am trying to determine where optional is optional.

Thanx for your answers.

I tried to see if this issue is related to my data, so I've started a new procect and created some points and polygons.

Than the Spatial join (with the 'closest' option) seemed to be working.

Perhaphs the issue is related to different coordinate system and\or file type (Shape file vs. gdb)?
