converting gpx file with track data to shapefile for ArcGIS v 10

Hello Everyone,

Does anyone know how to convert a gpx file containing track data files to a shapefile? I tried converting through ArcScripts but it only brought in one track not all of the tracks in the gpx file.

Please try the Data Interoperability extension to read your GPX data. You may obtain an evaluation license if you do not already have the extension.

Hi:

I'm with a search and rescue group that's been developing tools and workflow protocols to more effectively use GIS on SARs. There's a huge need to easily convert GPX to both trackpoints and line shapefiles. I'm actually amazed Arc didn't build this into its core function with version 10. I've used all of the utilities suggested -- and have long been a fan of DNR Garmin -- but they're external to ArcGIS desktop. GPS is so central to GIS that it no longer makes sense to not have a tool integrated into 10 to bring GPX into a project. ArcGIS Explorer has an outstanding and very easy to use function that's built in. Why not 10??

I'd also like to add my 2 cents.

Support for downloading GPS units to ArcMap is sorely missing at this time, simple products can seemingly easily download and upload tracks and points to and from GPS units. The core comms agent must be there somewhere as you can connect a real time GPS now to ArcMap, but not download tracks or waypoints.

This is core functionality that is missing from such a robust product such as ArcMap. Heck even the FREE Explorer can import GPX files natively while the expensive and robust ArcMAP simply can't.

I feel that ALL public safety departments and teams would give ESRI a huge round of applause if they would add support to pull data directly from GPS units. A bigger round if we had the ability to push polygons and points to the GPS also.

DNR Garmin can work in the ArcMap environment up to 9x via a toolbar. It is being extensively rewritten to be open source and perhaps as part of that it will be made to work in 10 too.

Can't get this toolbox/script to work in ArcGIS 9.3, and I can't find an older version of the toolbox. Is there a version available for ArcGIS9.3? Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!

I haven't tried the toolbox with 9x. I use GPS Trackmaker and/or DNR Garmin; free and fast and easy to use programs to do this conversion. Just open (and they open fast) and save. What ArcGIS needs is a simple right click on the layer and export to gpx functionality for that conversion, and add gpx the same as a shapefile in the other direction. If QGIS can do it certainly ArcGIS should.

Thanks for the other utilities. There's a number out there, of course, though getting that function as part of the core of ArcGIS 10 is really my preference and that or our SAR group. When running a SAR, we need to download the tracklogs of where our teams have searched. So we often get a bunch at once to download. Then we want to store them into a GDB. Edan Cain, a developer at ESRI, has actually developed a tool for our group that:

·        Is totally customized to support several needed fields, and creates and populates them if they don�??t exist.
·         appends to existing feature classes
·         iterates through all gpx files within an entire directory
·         Running the tool over and over again on the same directory only pulls the new additions
·         Lists where the gpx file is located on disk

He said it would be pretty easy to add this tool to the core of ArcGIS 10. Overall, it works great but there's still some glitches with differently acquired GPX files.

I just checked the DNR Garmin site again and they now say coding hasn't even started to get it into 10. Of course, that's specific to Garmin units so it can be made to connect directly and download.
