Error -494 enabling a geodatabase on SQL Server 2008 R2

I'm trying to enable a geodatabase with ArcGIS/ArcSDE 10.4 on a SQL Server 2008 R2 database. I get an error that says "The version of your database server is not supported
ERROR installing/upgrading ArcSDE, Error = -494"

My database is SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP2) 10.50.4000 Enterprise Edition (64-bit). I'm using the enable enterprise geodatabase tool which has always worked in the past. Although this is the first time I'm trying it with 10.4. Anyone come across this error or know how to fix it?

SQL Server 2008 or 2008 R2 is not supported starting at the 10.4.x release: Microsoft SQL Server database requirements for ArcGIS 10.4.x—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop

I know it is possible to connect to some older SQL Server 2008 R2 previous geodatabases but not create any new ones in SQL Server 2008 R2.

Thanks for the link. I guess we missed that when we upgraded to 10.4.
