Hello, Esri Young Professionals Network!

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Kavin Phabiani, I am currently a senior studying computer science at UC Riverside. I am currently in the process of applying to graduate programs in Spatial Data Science at universities such as USC and UIUC, as well as a few programs in pure Data Science. I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of geospatial technologies and data-driven insights, and I want to build a career where I can leverage these skills to tackle real-world challenges.

However, as I navigate the various options available, I’m seeking guidance from this community of experienced geospatial professionals. Here are a few questions I’d love your input on:

Is pursuing a specialized Spatial Data Science program the right path?

Programs like those at USC and UIUC offer a dedicated focus on geospatial analytics, which excites me. At the same time, I wonder if keeping things broader (e.g., through a general Data Science program) might provide more flexibility in the future. What do you think?

How valuable are geospatial tools like ArcGIS in the industry?

I’ve gained some experience with ArcGIS and Python for spatial analysis, and I’m curious: How central are tools like these in your day-to-day work? Should I focus on developing expertise in specific platforms, or should I prioritize broader technical skills like machine learning, big data, and cloud computing?

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?

If you were in my shoes, what steps would you take to build a strong foundation in this field? Are there professional organizations, internships, or specific projects you’d recommend pursuing?

I’d love to hear your thoughts and advice as I navigate these decisions. Thank you in advance for taking the time to share your wisdom. I am excited to be a part of the YPN community!

Hi Kavin,

These are great questions and I have some industry background with spatial data science so hopefully I can help you consider some things. I'm a water resource engineer by background but got a masters in a data science focused engineering program in 2020. Since then, I've been working for a consulting firm mainly utilizing ArcGIS for both desktop and online/enterprise environments to solve challenges water utilities face.

Based on your background, I think one of the the most important things you can do is to get real world experience through an internship. Is there a particular industry you're looking to utilize your data science skills? Having a drive towards solving specific problems will make your career more rewarding and keep you centered when things get difficult so I would look towards finding what that is if you haven't already and then look for internships utilizing GIS in those fields. It could be finance, engineering, government, etc.

Best,

Sean
