Spaial join - add data to the original feature class

Hi!

I am looking for help with some fundemental tasks that I am wrestling with.

I have a feature layer with building footprints and a point feature classs with hight data. Now I want to add the hight data to the building feature class. I do not want to make a new feature class, but add the data to the original building footprint feature class.

If a join of some kind has been made to the building features, then you can add a new field and use the field calculator to copy the values over from the join table to the original file. There is no automagic way of making the joined data stay without doing the field calculation or saving to a new file
