Is it possible to grant users access to online E-Learning using an enterprise Portal login? Our primary ArcGIS platform is Portal, not ArcGIS Online, and we'd like to reduce the number of user accounts each user needs to understand and manage.

Thanks,

Heather

Hi Heather, at this time, Portal enterprise logins are not supported. If you have an ArcGIS Online organization in addition to Portal, the administrator can enable Esri access for members of the ArcGIS Online organization, and then they could use their enterprise logins to access e-Learning. Portal-only users need to be connected in My Esri and use an Esri public account to access e-Learning.

Yet another year has passed, has this functionality been added yet? Can this be solved through an AGOL/Portal collaboration? We use SAML for both AGOL and Portal, seems to be a simple solution especially since our Portal is available outside of our firewall.

All of my users are provisioned in our Portal through Active Directory, I would prefer not to duplicate management through AGO. We have a collaboration from our Portal to our AGO, surely there must be a way that we can share a verification item that would allow a user to access the Esri platform utilizing our current provisioning.

Or...why can't the sign in requirement for free training material just be removed? It's already free - just make it accessible.

Hi Brett, thanks for sharing your challenges with enabling e-Learning access for your users, your frustration is understandable. Our team continues to explore options to solve this--it's a tough nut to crack given the security issues.

Regarding the ArcGIS account sign-in, in addition to its use as a maintenance status check, an account is the mechanism that allows us to track learner progress (and make it easy for learners to pick up where they left off), award certificates of completion, offer wish-list and learning plan features, maintain Esri training history over time, and much more. People taking free training appreciate the benefits just as much as those taking paid or maintenance-only training. 🙂 It's not likely we'll do away with the sign-in. Nonetheless, I'll pass your suggestions along.

It's been almost 7 years since this post was created and 7 minutes since I came across it. Currently on the phone with Esri support right now asking about this and they might be piling on to an enhancement request if one exists already.

We have an Enterprise Agreement for small AEC and are using Portal because having 150-300 named AGO users is co$tly. Esri ought to grant a bucket of users to EA customers to allow so many Viewer AGO users that could then integrate with SSO as we have done with Portal for ArcGIS. At least that would allow us to have the SSO functionality even though each use would then have both a Portal and an organizational AGO account.

So, my users now have to maintain two username/passwords, I have to manage two accounts for each and pay an additional $110/yr per user, just for "Free" training? I think I'm starting to see why no movement has been made on this in over 7 years.

You can connect them to your My Esri organization (e-Learning access is enabled by default for users connected in My Esri). The steps to do this are in this post: https://community.esri.com/t5/esri-training-blog/managing-enterprisewide-access-to-esri-e-learning/ba-p/900947 .

Just kicking the tires on this request since it seems to keep falling off the desk. We are standing up a Portal and would like access to the ESRI academy as we have with our AGOL accounts. We leverage SAML authentication, and I realize the authentication happens at our end. We will have a collab into AGOL, but not all users in the Portal will have an account in AGOL.

Couldnt this come down to an email domain vetting? @domain.com then check for a current maintenance contract or EA and then allow access? Would appreciate some meaningful movement on this. If there is an ArcGIS ideas I can upvote on this would love a link.

Esri has been investigating this issue for a long time but unfortunately there is no solution yet for on-premises portal users. If adding users to your ArcGIS Online organization is not an option, adding them to your My Esri organization is still the current solution. In My Esri, you can send an automated invite to many portal users at once, and they simply need to click the link in the email, sign in with a public or ArcGIS Online account, then enroll in any e-learning that interests them.

We realize this is not the desired solution, but it does have a few advantages: in My Esri, you can time-box e-learning access for a single user or group of users if there's a need (contractors, interns, etc.), you have visibility into e-learning consumption via My Esri reports, and you can assign a "Training permissions-only" administrator to manage e-learning access. Users can securely link their portal account to a public account to easily switch back and forth on Esri Academy and other Esri sites like this Community. This blog post shows the steps: https://www.esri.com/arcgis-blog/products/arcgis-online/administration/link-multiple-arcgis-accounts.

Thanks for getting back to me on this. We have a mix of AGOL and Enterprise users, so ideally we would want those seen as one in the same for training purposes. The way I see this going is users will end up with two distinct training accounts creating confusion and a subpar end-user experience. One account per real Organization would solve this issue I think. I've created an Idea on this topic, hopefully more jump on this!
