Hello, Esri Community! I'm a faculty member and I regularly incorporate a number of tutorials as assignments for my students to complete. I ask them to upload a copy of their course completion certificates as proof that they completed the course requirements. My university does have a site license to Esri and the students access the software and tutorials through the university access point.

I have never had this come up, but this semester a student has reached out because they are unable to have the certificate display their preferred name. As they put it, the certificate shows their deadname. I'm pretty sure it is because the certificates of completion are tied to the name that they first enrolled at the university with.

Is there a way for a certificate to display a preferred name? It can be perceived as disrespectful to address someone using their deadname, and I certainly do not want an assignment to be a trigger for negative emotions. The student says that they try to change their name in their Esri profile every time they log in, but the certificates do not update.

Thank you, kind Esri folks!

Hi @KimLersch1! Thank you for reaching out with your question. Can you please have your student follow the instructions below? If they still have an issue, please have them reach out to GISTraining@esri.com

Click the pencil icon next to the name to edit the name.

Update the name to what you’d like to appear on the certificate and click ‘Save.’

Log in to Esri Academy using this username.

Navigate to My Dashboard --> Learning Activity

Scroll to the course and click the ‘View Certificate’ button located next to the course listing. The updated name should appear.
