Hi,

i am using the GIS TUTORIAL Workbook and need to enter the FACT FINDER website: factfinder2.census.gov . I cannot get access to this website and don`t know why. Is it just accessable from the US? I can access each website - just this one isn`t working. My destination is Germany. Does anyone know how i could get access to the fact finder website?

Hi Jörg,

If you are using this book (or even the version before it for 10.0):

Then, the websites listed there are outdated.

I had seen these newer instructions written for it. I hope they work for you:

It looks like a link from the book is outdated. The census link from esri's site no longer works.

Instead, do this:

Go to this site: http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/geo/shapefiles2010/main

Under select a layer type, select Census Tracts and click submit

Under Census Tract (2010) select Illinois and click Submit

Select Cook County and click Download

Click Open for the downloaded compressed file tl_2010_17031_tract10.zip > Open

Click Extract all files

Extract the files to the Chapter5 folder of MyExercises

From here I believe you will be able to complete the rest of the assignment (with opening ArcMap, loading that census tract data, looking at the table, etc.).

Hi Adrian & Dan,

thank you very much for the fast replies. I realized that some links in this book don`t point to the right website anymore. But unfortunately that is not my problem. I was able to complete the exercise in your example. There is just another structure on the site. It was easy to find the data.

But in later exercises i need to download data from this site: factfinder2.census.gov . E.g in Assignment 5-1

The problem with this link is not that i cannot find the data - this site cannot be opened. My browser shows me an error message. Each browser, different pcs, different internet access points. It seems that this site cannot be opened in gernany.

Do you know another souce for these data? I need several data from the American Community survey.
