Hi all! I have been using ArcGIS for a long time, and now I need to get a GIS certification. I saw there are different types of certifications in the ESRI Website. Which would be the most general to start with? Are there special prep classes you thought it was wise to take, or did you just study and take it on your own? And lastly, do you think that ESRI is the most appropriate certification to have when looking for a GIS-Job?

Hello,

I think its great you are pursuing certifications. ESRI certifications are definitely worth while, but I also think its important to obtain your GISP. This is a certification that is nationally recognized and issues by the GISC. Here is the website if you want to check it out: https://www.gisci.org/

The GISP is a cumulative portfolio that can be filled out online and if you have several years of ArcGIS experience, education, volunteerism, and skill; all of these attributes can be added up for your points to become eligible. There is a test now which you have to pass, but I didn't have to do this for mine since I got in before the test was required.

For the ESRI certification track, you can go to their site. It gives you certification track paths and each one has detailed preparation material you can choose to participate in to prepare you for taking the certification exams. Which Esri component is your strength? You should choose a core certification (ArcGIS Desktop/ ArcGIS Enterprise) based on your strength.

ArcGIS Desktop Associate 19-001 | Technical Certification (esri.com) could be the most attempted Esri technical certification globally. Its successor, ArcGIS Pro Associate 2101 | Technical Certification (esri.com) will be releasing publicly in a month's time.

Check the brochure in the Exam page for more information on skills measured and related preparation resources. You could check Esri Training Catalog | Find Courses on GIS and ArcGIS Topics for learning-plans on appropriate Esri exam(s).

If you feel you want to keep your career relevant and updated with Esri Technology, Esri Technical Certification will definitely help.

Another relevant certification in GIS industry would be GISP certification - GISCI.

ArcGIS Desktop Entry 19-001 and subsequently prepare your self for
ArcGIS Desktop Professional 19-001

Hi Antonella, glad you are looking into Esri technical certification! It is a great thing to add to your resume and to grow your professional ArcGIS skills. Esri has some brand-new certifications releasing in December (and more coming in early 2022) that may pique your interest. Depending on your level of experience with ArcGIS Pro, you may consider taking the ArcGIS Pro Foundation exam (more entry-level) or the ArcGIS Pro Associate exam (multiple years of experience--most likely the exam for you).

Once you go to the exam page, you can click the Download Exam Information button to learn more. The ArcGIS Pro exams will be publicly available in mid-December, and at that time, the last page in the Exam Information Guide will have a learning plan full of courses we recommend you take to prepare for the exam.

There is also a GIS Fundamentals exam coming in 2022 that is for those who can perform entry-level mapping and visualization tasks, sharing, and analysis.

Thank you very much for your reply! I am a geologist, and my current posdtoc is almost finishing. Since I have a good background in the use of ArcGIS (specially ArcMap 10.5) , I was thinking that getting a certification would open my future job opportunities into the private sector and a remote position potentially. I see that there are a lot of new vacancies being post lately, so I thought this could be a good idea. So, your advice so much usefull for me, to start working on this project. Than you so much for your suggestions!

I just passed the GISP exam. I just have to get 6 more months of experience to get my GISP certification which will get me a small raise and put me first in line for a GIS administrator or manager position.

To study for the GISP exam, I listened to this Youtube channel on the drive to work... GISP Study

I also read this book.. The Ultimate GISP Exam Study Guide
